Problem-Based Learning (PBL) aims to expand knowledge and development of skills in collective, cooperative and collaborative work, initiated with hypothetical problem situations. Although PBL started in the area of health care and focused on Higher Education, its principles enable its use in other areas of knowledge and its use is also viable for schools. Some teachers in the United States already challenged their Middle School students to experiment with PBL teaching and learning strategies, but, in Brazil, no study was found reporting the use of the method at this stage of teaching, giving to this research the character of innovation and originality. Although the method was originally conceived in an interdisciplinary and self-direct structure, it was identified that adaptations are allowed and the research results showed that teacher moderation at all stages is necessary for good results to be achieved. The principles that guide PBL are rooted in learning through John Dewey’s experience and social relationships and Jerome Seymour Bruner’s motivation to learn. This investigation proposes to explore the social relationships experienced in the classroom, which become sources of affection, in Benedictus de Spinoza’s perspective. The research has as hypothesis that the application of the PBL method allows greater approximation of the teacher with the students, enhancing the teaching and learning relationship. From this hypothesis, the following question was asked: Does the PBL method, applied in a public Middle School discipline, create possibilities for the teacher to approach students, offering opportunities to improve teaching and learning? To answer this question, the collaborative research aimed to analyse the potentiality of using the PBL method in building classroom relationships that can promote changes in the teaching and learning processes and used various methodological instruments, such as interviews with the teacher, narratives sent by the teacher throughout the school year, observation in many classroom opportunities, questionnaire with students after having tried the method and document analysis such as curriculum and material produced by both the teacher and students. The research took place at a Middle School of a Municipal Public School located in the hinterlands of the state of São Paulo and had the collaboration of a History teacher who offered to apply the method in four 7th grade classrooms. As a result, it was identified that there was a greater approximation of the teacher with the students and allowed him to identify a series of needs of the students, enabling the construction of strategies to overcome previously unnoticed barriers. Regarding the students, it was possible to identify that reading is a barrier to the method and it was evidenced the resistance of students working in heterogeneous groups.
