This is a research based on the Historical-Cultural Theory in order to investigate possible contributions that the use of the tablet, handled by kindergarten children to photograph what they like most in school, brings to their experiences and to our understanding of their relationships with the environment. The participants are four and five years old children, belonging to a kindergarten group, from the public school system of Campinas-SP. The objective was achieved through: observations (video- films); activities with a tablet (handled by the children and mediated by the researcher), in which the students were able to move around the school, organized in groups of a maximum of five members, to hold 11 photo shoots on what they liked the most in the institution in question; and, finally, an interview with the participants, in which the photos were presented and they chose the ones they liked the most in seven selection sessions. The use of the tablet ensured the production of photographic material from the school context (577 photos), the group visual sense at the productions of each one and the selection of the material produced by the participants. The analyzes sought to examine (i) the importance of the activity with the tablet for the meanings and interpretations of children about their experiences in the school context (ii) the ways in which children use digital resources to record their experiences in kindergarten. The empirical material produced was analyzed in three axes: (Re)discovering the tablet; (Re)knowing the context and (re)remembering content; and, Interweaving and strengthening relationships: memories mobilized by the activity with the tablet. The results show that the activity developed with a tablet provided children with not only meanings, but also (re)meanings about the school context, revealing, through their narratives, interpretations laden with memories from experiences lived inside and outside the school; they also point to a procedural heterogeneity in the modes of appropriation of resources for activity with the tablet among the participants, which makes it possible to problematize the term “digital natives” – as it has been addressed in scientific literature and in the mainstream media. In this study, we were able to perceive different strategies formulated by the participants with the purpose of handling the mobile device, which seemed so familiar to some and so unusual to others. We have not yet identified a proficiency or an innate domain, but a disposition, agility and, without a doubt, a plasticity for the learning and handling of the equipment by the children. In addition, the photos and justifications that the participants indicate as criteria for having taken/chosen them, show that, in their relations with the environment, the equipment, spaces and playful actions are particularly significant for children. This study, therefore, presents relevant results on a theme that is still little explored in the scientific field, providing reflections about the use of Digital Information and Communication Technologies (DICT) within kindergarten classes.
