Seeking to understand the origin and foundation of the political structure of his time, in the path of Michel Foucault, the Italian jusphilosopher Giorgio Agamben conducts archaeological-genealogical research, which results in his philosophical project (composed of nine books) entitled Homo Sacer. Throughout his research, the author identifies and proposes paradigms that help him to answer such an objective. Among them, he recovers from the Roman archaic right the figure of homo sacer that, in that context, referred to the exclusion, the banishment of a man from his own community, vetoing its sacrifice to the gods: it became killable and uncrackable. From the broad theoretical framework presented by Agamben around the articulation between naked life (homo sacer) and sovereignty, this dissertation intends to “shed light” on homo sacer, which is configured in his work as the reference of western politics. Therefore, it is essential to understand its articulation with other concepts and paradigms developed in Agamben's research, such as state of exception and group and field, a discussion that is located more directly in the first three works of the project, namely: Homo Sacer I (1995), Remnants of Auschwitz (1998) and State of exception (2003). The methodological approach adopted in this dissertation was the bibliographic one, and the deepening of the theme implied the study of key authors in Agamben's work. The political function attributed by sacredness to life instigates a broad reflection and argumentation about the concepts and conceptions that have been consolidated on the western tradition, as well as on the understanding of the growing problems in the present time.
