A saúde bucal do idoso no Brasil e as políticas públicas: uma revisão de literatura

Abstract

A transição demográfica em curso no Brasil e no mundo, por consequência da redução da taxa de natalidade e mortalidade infantil, resulta no aumento da expectativa de vida e o consequente envelhecimento populacional. Visto que os idosos são grande parte da população atual com tendência a aumentar no futuro, com condições de saúde bucal e geral às vezes delicadas, é de suma importância mudanças governamentais no oferecimento de políticas públicas de saúde para suprir as necessidades dos mesmos. Além disso, o cirurgião-dentista deve-se atentar cada vez mais sobre essa realidade e aumentar o foco sobre seus conhecimentos na área da saúde bucal e geral do idoso, para que, de forma multidisciplinar, proporcione uma melhor assistência a estes pacientes. É necessário entender que os idosos apresentam variadas condições sistêmicas decorrentes do processo natural de envelhecimento, além das condições psicológicas e sociais, necessitando de atenção integral. Sendo assim, os autores realizaram uma revisão de literatura sobre a transição demográfica, condições de saúde geral e bucal dos idosos e as políticas públicas existentes de saúde bucal.

The demographic transition happening in Brazil and around the world, because of the reduction of the birth rate and infant mortality, results in an increase of life expectancy and consequent population aging. Since the elderly are a large part of the current population with a tendency to increase in the future, with sometimes delicate oral and general health conditions, governmental changes in the provision of public health policies to meet their needs are extremely important. In addition, the dentist must pay increasing attention to this reality and increase the focus on their knowledge in oral and general health of the elderly, so that, in a multidisciplinary way, they can provide better care for these patients. It is necessary to understand that the elderly have different systemic conditions resulting from the natural aging process, in addition to psychological and social conditions, requiring comprehensive care. Therefore, the authors carry out a literature review on the demographic transition, general and oral health conditions of the elderly and the existing public policies on oral health.
