This research studies the garden as a therapeutic space, dealing with concepts about restorative environments in the so-called therapeutic gardens. Since the 18th century, these gardens have been implanted in monasteries, hospitals and medical clinics with emphasis in the health of their users and countless scientific works report the importance of these spaces in the recovery of patients and in the generation of well-being. The investigation aims at understanding the theme by means of concepts that evaluate and interpret potentially therapeutic spaces, emphasizing their architectural and biological qualities, dealing with theories on restorative environments, clarifying their spatial qualities that generate benefits, their recurring typologies and their projectual characteristics, notably in the qualification of the built and garden areas. The methodology was based on the dialectic process, by means of a detailed and comparative study, drawn on bibliography related with the concepts of space, place and landscape in which the so-called therapeutic gardens are set, searching for their unfoldings in empiricism. The theories unveiled by the bibliographic review, about places called therapeutic gardens, were reflected in the concreteness of the propositions, highlighting their spatial and biological qualities, seeking to point out the benefits in the user welfare process applied to a space built in the Sousas district in the city of Campinas (São Paulo), called Gisele Gordon Square. A space called Jardim dos Sentidos (Garden of Senses) was built in it, which consists of a sensory garden used as a tool in the treatment of people with disabilities or in the process of physical rehabilitation of the CRR (Jorge Ralful Kanawaty Reference Center in Rehabilitation). A building, located in the middle of a green area, practically separates two qualities of gardens: one with characteristics that stimulate the senses (sensory garden) and the other that stimulates the physical characteristics (a garden with paths and an outdoor gym), with this type of garden being very widespread in public spaces. Considering the spatial and biological questions, the research emphasized the sensory questions through vegetated spaces, also using theories specific to the quality of architecture. Therefore, the theoretical tools provided comprehension of the qualities in the unfoldings of the garden areas, confirming its applicability in the aforementioned case study, giving opportunity to expand and deepen the concepts and principles for analyzing spatial quality and effectiveness.
