Uma Revoada de Corvos: análise de traduções do poema The Raven, de Edgar Allan Poe

Abstract

O presente artigo tem como objetivo discutir aspectos de natureza linguística e extralinguística entre as traduções de Fernando Pessoa (1924) e de Baptista (2016), considerada amadora, do poema The Raven, escrito por Edgar Allan Poe e publicado, em sua versão final, em 1849. Levando-se em conta características semânticas, sintáticas, culturais e sociais, objetiva-se aqui refletir sobre os objetivos e estratégias de cada tradução, enfatizando semelhanças e diferenças entre as interpretações e propósitos dos dois tradutores. Serão analisados três excertos do poema e, juntamente disso, também será proposta uma terceira tradução de minha autoria. O embasamento teórico se dará através das discussões de Lawrence Venuti (1996) sobre o fenômeno da invisibilidade do tradutor e de Rosemary Arrojo (1993; 2007) sobre a questão da fidelidade tradutória. A discussão promove a reflexão sobre os diversos objetivos aos quais as traduções são propostas e, com isso, tomam-se certos caminhos tradutórios para alcançar tal finalidade.

This essay has the goal to discuss aspects of linguistic and extralinguistic natures between Fernando Pessoa’s translation (1924) and an amateur-considered translation (BAPTISTA, 2016) of the poem The Raven, by Edgar Allan Poe, published in its final version, in 1849. Taking into consideration semantic, syntactic, and socio-cultural characteristics, the purpose of the discussion is to reflect upon the goals and strategies of each translation, emphasizing similarities and dissimilarities between the two translators’ interpretations and purposes. Three excerpts of the poem will be analyzed and there will also be a suggestion of another translation made by me. The theoretical support comes from Lawrence Venuti’s (1996) and the translator’s invisibility phenomenon and Rosemary Arrojo’s (1993; 2007) fidelity matter. The discussion promotes a reflection upon the several objectives proposed to translations and, therefore, the strategies used to reach that goal.
