Given the problematic and fertile field of study, this research aims to analyze the relationship between Church and State in the second half of the XIX century, focusing on the religious brotherhoods, in particular, the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacramento of Campinas, SP. Such Brotherhoods had direct participation in the constitution of religion and religiosity in Brazil. Our research proposes this analysis in the light of the context of the so-called “ultramontane reforms”, which aimed at a rapprochement of local religiosity with Rome, trough the reform of clergy formation and seminars posture, as well as popular devotions and customs already rooted in society. As a result, the Brotherhoods were also subject to adjustments based on the recommendations of the Holy See. This dynamic generated a series of situations, both external to the Church and the State, and within the different lines of clergy positioning and performance of these religion Brotherhoods, who due to their great social and political prestige, did not accept submitting to the Roman guidelines, generating one of the most remarkable moments in the history of the Church in Brazil, which became know as the “Religious Question”. The research is based on the analysis of correspondence and official documents of the bishopric of São Paulo, as well as the documental archive of the Brotherhoods of the Blessed Sacramento of Campinas, as well as a literature review on the subject, aiming at a reading key for understanding the relations between Church and State inserted in a local context, from the performance of the referred brotherhood.
