A mística nas Confessiones de Santo Agostinho: uma análise fenomenológica

Abstract

Agostinho de Hipona (354-430) foi um escritor, teólogo, filósofo e bispo que marcou significativamente o mundo ocidental. Conhecido por suas várias obras, Agostinho dedicou sua vida intelectual, após a conversão ao cristianismo, a aprofundar muitos temas da fé cristã, tornando-se, desta forma, um eloquente expositor da ortodoxia. Dentre as suas obras mais conhecidas estão as Confessiones. O volume composto por treze livros não se encaixa nos escritos propriamente doutrinários de Agostinho, mas emerge como um texto singular no qual vários temas desenvolvidos pelo hiponense ao longo de sua vida confluem em uma narrativa autobiográfica mesclada de fortes acentos místicos. A presença de uma experiência mística na vida e na obra de Agostinho de Hipona tem sido objeto de estudo de diversos pesquisadores e muitas formas de aproximação de seus textos corroboram para que a plausabilidade de uma experiência mística perene, expressa em textos e pregações, seja real. Neste sentido, esta pesquisa objetiva analisar fenomenologicamente as Confessiones com o intuito de evidenciar uma experiência mística singular que perpassa a vida toda de Agostinho e lhe orienta a percepção de si à luz da fé cristã. Para tal, esta pesquisa discute cientificamente e historicamente a construção da compreensão da mística enquanto uma experiência radical de Deus que se manifesta diversamente ao longo da história. Em seguida, discutir-se-á como a biografia e as obras de Agostinho, compreendidas dentro do seu horizonte intelectual próprio, expressam a presença dessa experiência mística fontal que lhe orienta a vida. Por fim, assumindo a plausabilidade da presença de uma mística em Agostinho e suas obras, tomar-se-á as Confessiones sob uma ótica fenomenológica e, a partir dos textos que se dão a conhecer, a pesquisa evidenciará quais são as características, os modos narrativos, os momentos e os principais aspectos da mística de Agostinho contida nas Confessiones. Percorrido este itinerário, pretende-se ter como resultado uma significativa contribuição para a pesquisa acerca da mística no Brasil que, como campo em desenvolvimento, pode se enriquecer com um olhar sobre um dos grandes Padres da Igreja que, dado sua vida e obra, alarga o horizonte da mística cristã evidenciando o seu acontecer no interior mais concreto da própria existência humana.

Augustine of Hippo (354-430) was a writer, theologian, philosopher and bishop who significantly impacted the Western world. Known for his various works, Augustine dedicated his intellectual life, after converting to Christianity, to delving deeper into many themes of the Christian faith, thus becoming an eloquent expositor of orthodoxy. Among his best-known works are the Confessiones. The volume composed of thirteen books does not fit into Augustine's strictly doctrinal writings, but emerges as a singular text in which several themes developed by the Hyponian throughout his life converge in an autobiographical narrative mixed with strong mystical emphasis. The presence of a mystical experience in the life and work of Augustine of Hippo has been the object of study by several researchers and many ways of approaching his texts confirm that the plausibility of a perennial mystical experience, expressed in texts and preaching, is real. In this sense, this research aims to phenomenologically analyze the Confessiones with the aim of highlighting a singular mystical experience that permeates Augustine's entire life and guides his perception of himself in the light of the Christian faith. To this end, this research discusses scientifically and historically the construction of the understanding of mysticism as a radical experience of God that manifests itself differently throughout history. Next, we will discuss how Augustine's biography and works, understood within his own intellectual horizon, express the presence of this source mystical experience that guides his life. Finally, assuming the plausibility of the presence of a mysticism in Augustine and his works, the Confessiones will be taken from a phenomenological perspective and, based on the texts that make themselves known, the research will highlight the characteristics, the ways narratives, moments and main aspects of Augustine's mysticism contained in the Confessiones. Having followed this itinerary, it is intended to result in a significant contribution to research on mysticism in Brazil which, as a developing field, can be enriched with a look at one of the great Fathers of the Church who, given his life and work, broadens the horizon of Christian mysticism, highlighting its happening within the most concrete interior of human existence itself.
