A cidade de Piracicaba (SP) e seu rio: urbanidade na orla fluvial

Abstract

Para fundar os primeiros aglomerados que se desdobraram em vilas ou cidades, o ser humano sempre optou pela proximidade das águas, recurso vital para o desenvolvimento das povoações. A partir do século XIX, inicia-se uma cultura predatória, que relegou as várzeas e rios urbanos ao abandono e à deterioração sob a justificativa do progresso e da expansão urbana. Desde o terceiro quartel do século XX, intensificaram-se os debates e eventos acerca da conscientização sobre a finitude dos recursos naturais, entre os quais, a relação complexa da água com a vida. Esta pesquisa explora a temática dos rios urbanos, objetivando investigar as configurações socioespaciais das beiras do rio Piracicaba contida na área urbana do município homônimo. Devido à sua dimensão, para compreender as especificidades do objeto de estudo, ele foi subdividido em sete trechos, nos quais três deles foram elencados para aprofundamento da investigação, enriquecendo as análises e identificando quais características propiciam maior senso de urbanidade. A pesquisa correlacionou dialeticamente os referenciais teóricos com observações e coletas de dados empíricos obtidos no local, avaliando-os e sintetizando-os através de análises exploratórias e descritivas. A investigação permitiu discutir, debater e refletir questões contemporâneas no que tange à relação entre a cidade, rio e sua orla. Utilizando Piracicaba e seu rio como estudo de caso, foi possível constatar a diversidade de instrumentos analíticos em relação à qualidade espacial e apontar problemas e potencialidades estruturantes do planejamento e desenho urbano que poderão auxiliar positivamente futuras intervenções à beira-rio ao incentivarem a valorização dos corpos d’água e a promoção da urbanidade em primeiro plano.

In order to find the first clusters that have unfolded into towns or cities, human beings have always opted for the proximity of the waters, a vital resource for the development of villages. From the 19th century, a predatory culture had begun, which relegated the floodplains and urban rivers to abandonment and deterioration under the justification of urban progress and expansion. Since the last quarter of the 20th century, debates and events about awareness of the finiteness of natural resources, including the complex relationship between water and life, have intensified. This research explores the theme of urban rivers, aiming to investigate the socio-spatial configuration of the Piracicaba river border contained in the urban area of Piracicaba. The object of study, due to its size, was subdivided into seven sections to facilitate understanding of its specificities, in which three of them were listed for further investigation, enriching the assay and identifying which spatial characteristics provide a greater sense of urbanity. The research correlated dialectically the theoretical references with observations and empirical data collections obtained in the place, evaluating them and synthesizing them through exploratory and descriptive analyzes. The investigation allowed discussing, debate and considering contemporary issues regarding the relationship between the city, river and its border. Considering Piracicaba and its river as a case study, it was possible to verify the diversity of analytical instruments regarding spatial quality and to point out the problems and structuring potentialities of urban planning and design, which can assist in future interventions along the river by encouraging enhancement of water bodies and the promotion of urbanity in the foreground.
