A religião como o fundamento da coragem no pensamento de Paul Tillich

Abstract

Esta dissertação pretende compreender a religião como o fundamento da coragem no pensamento do teólogo e filósofo Paul Tillich (1886 - 1965). Em seus textos procurou demonstrar que a dimensão religiosa está presente em todas as esferas da atividade cultural. Em diálogo aberto com todos os aspectos da realidade, discutiu sobre a situação do homem moderno inseguro em sua autonomia. Em interdependência com seu conceito de angústia desenvolveu o conceito de coragem na obra A Coragem de Ser (1952). A partir do “método de correlação” analisou a situação do homem moderno por meio de questões filosóficas e respostas teológicas. O conceito de coragem tillichiano é uma tentativa de superar, pela aceitação, a insegurança, a imperfeição e a incerteza que ameaça constantemente o ser humano. Segundo Tillich, a religião enquanto um dos aspectos do espírito humano é a substância e o fundamento do sentido incondicional e a fonte da coragem última. Por meio do método teórico-bibliográfico, relacionando referências primárias e secundárias, investiga-se a religião como o fundamento da coragem de ser (autoafirmação) apesar da negação do ser. Para evidenciar a relação entre coragem e religião esta dissertação organiza-se em três momentos. No primeiro, apresentar-seá o “método de correlação” desenvolvido e aplicado na obra A Coragem de Ser (1952). No segundo, será analisado o conceito de religião tillichiano (Richtung auf das Unbedingte) no período germânico (1919-1925). No terceiro, o conceito de coragem será relacionado com o conceito de religião nos textos O ser e Deus (1951), Coragem e Transcendência (1952) e Dinâmica da Fé (1957). Desse modo, investiga-se em que medida a religião fundamenta a coragem em uma cultura marcada pela angústia da dúvida e falta de sentido.

This dissertation intends understanding religion as the foundation of courage in the theologian and philosopher Paul Tillich’ thought of (1886 - 1965). His works tried to demonstrate that the religious dimension is present in all spheres of cultural activity. In open dialogue with all the aspects of reality, he discussed the modern and insecure man's situation in his own autonomy. In interdependence with his anguish, he developed the concept of courage in his work The courage to be (1952). From the “correlation method” he analyzed the situation of modern man through philosophical issues and theological answers. Tillichian’ concept of courage is an overcome attempt, through acceptance, the insecurity, imperfection and uncertainty that threatens the human being constantly. According to Tillich, religion as one of the human spirit’ aspects is the substance and foundation of unconditional sense and the source of ultimate courage. Through the theoretical-bibliographic method, relating primary and secondary references, religion is investigated as the foundation of the courage to be (self-assertion) despite the denial of being. To demonstrate the relation between courage and religion, this text is structured in three moments. In the first, to present the “correlation method” that was developed and applied in the work The courage to be (1952). In the second, we are going to analyze the tillichian’ concept of religion (Richtung auf das Unbedingte) in the Germanic period (1919- 1925). In the third, it will relate the courage concept with the religion concept in the texts Being and God (1951), Courage and Transcendence (1952) and Dynamics of Faith (1957). Thus, the objective is understanding to which extent religion bases courage in a culture that is marked by the anguish of doubt and lack of meaning.
