Abstract

Este artigopropõe a compreensão do lugar simbólico da Bíblia anotada de Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, de 1909, no movimento fundamentalista original, ocorrido no seio do protestantismo estadunidense no início do século XX; assim como a interpretação desua influência na divulgação da teologia dispensacionalista e na popularização da escatologia pré-milenarista. As introduções e notas de Scofield em sua Bíblia, ao longo de pouco mais de um século, têm contribuído para fomentar, dentre evangélicos fundamentalistas no mundo todo, a rejeição do tempo presente, em virtude da idealização do passado e da construção segura do futuro, sustentadas pela hermenêutica fundamentalista eliteralista dos textos bíblicos

This article proposes a comprehension of the symbolic dimension of The ScofieldReferenceBiblefrom 1909 in the original fundamentalist movement that took place within the AmericanProtestantismin the early 20thcentury. It also discusses the interpretation of The Scofield Reference Bibleinfluence on both the propagation of the dispensationalist theology andthe popularization of the Premillennialist eschatology. Scofield's Bible introductions and notes during a little longer than one century have been contributing to foster among Christianfundamentalists worldwidethe rejection of the present time in virtueof an idealization of the past and an assured build up of the future. Such rejection is itself sustained by a hermeneutical practice based on the fundamentalist and literalist analysis of the biblical texts.
