Caminhos e direções do puritanismo e conservadorismo protestantes: o fundamentalismo avant la lettre e a sua presença no Brasil

Abstract

O objetivo geral deste artigo é afirmar que o conservadorismo teológico protestante na Europa e nas Américas não teve origem diretamente ligada à Reforma do século XVI nem à obra dos reformadores. Com o recorte direcionado para as relações entre calvinismo e puritanismo na Inglaterra do século XVII, o que inclui a colonização do Norte da América como consequência, desdobram-se os três objetivos específicos desta investigação bibliográfica: compreender a segunda metade do século XIX como o tempo de gestação da mentalidade fundamentalista (batizada aqui de fundamentalismo avant la lettre); relacionar a noção de inerrância bíblica com a história do calvinismo puritano; e discutir que a chegada do fundamentalismo ao Brasil se deu ainda no período avant la lettre

The main objective of this article is to affirm that the protestant theological conservatism in Europe and in Americas have not had its origins directly linked nor to the Reformation of the 16th Century neither to the work of the reformers. With the focus on the relationships between Calvinism and puritanism in England of the 17th Century, including the colonization of North America as its consequence, three objectives are specifically unfolded from this bibliographical investigation. 1) Understand the second half of the 19th Century as a gestational period of the fundamentalist mentality (that we are calling the fundamentalism avant la lettre); 2) relate the notion of biblical inerrancy to the history of the puritan Calvinism; 3) discuss that the arrival of the fundamentalism in Brazil happened still in the period avant la lettre
