Fundamentalismo e Adventismo no século XXI: uma leitura da Revista Adventista (2000-2019)

Abstract

Com base em pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, este artigo contribuiu com mais um passo na direção de classificar o fundamentalismo protestante no Brasil. Mais do que reconhecer a presença do fundamentalismo na igreja do outro, o que se busca é compreender como a Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia se localiza no fundamentalismo ou, por inversão, como reconhece o fundamentalismo em si mesma. Para isso, a quase totalidade de obras de referência (tanto as fontes primárias como as secundárias) foi buscada em documentos e autores adventistas. Como resultado, constata-se que, dentro da mais que centenária controvérsia liberalismo versus fundamentalismo, o adventista tenderia ao fundamentalismo, não fosse ele um termo-conceito carregado de juízo de valor negativo. Entretanto, adventistas reconhecem seu "fundamentalismo" (assim, entre aspas) no que preservam do conservadorismo protestante sobre o estatuto de verdade das Escrituras - mas não na totalidade do espírito e ethos do movimento fundamentalista originário.

Based on bibliographic and documentary research, this article contributes another step toward classifying Protestant fundamentalism in Brazil. Rather than merely identifying the presence of fundamentalism in the "church of the other," the objective is to understand how the Seventh-day Adventist Church situates itself within fundamentalism or, conversely, how it recognizes fundamentalism within itself.

To achieve this, nearly all reference works—both primary and secondary sources—were drawn from Adventist documents and authors. The results indicate that, within the century-old controversy of liberalism versus fundamentalism, Adventists would tend toward fundamentalism if the term were not a "concept-word" burdened with negative value judgments. However, Adventists do recognize their "fundamentalism" (in quotation marks) regarding what they preserve of Protestant conservatism concerning the truth status of Scripture—though not in the entirety of the spirit and ethos of the original fundamentalist movement.
