Peter Berger e Rubem Alves: religião como construção social entre a manutenção do mundo e a libertação

Abstract

Uma das grandes contribuições da sociologia para o estudo da religião foi o desvelamento de sua construção social. A religião, afirma a sociologia doconhecimento, aqui representada por Peter Berger, assim como toda a realidade social, é construção humana. Toda sociedade humana é um empreendimento de construção do mundo e a religião ocupa um lugar destacado nesse empreendimento: é um privilegiado instrumento de legitimação, de manutenção da ordem, de preservação do status quo. No entanto, paradoxalmente, também afirma Berger, em alguns casos, a religião possibilitará a desalienação, exercerá função crítica, aparecerá na história, quer como força que sustenta, quer como força que abala o mundo. Se a religião, por um lado, tende a conceder a qualidade da imortalidade às formações humanas, por outro, pode chegar a relativizá-las radicalmente. Com o objetivo de contribuir para a compreensão da religião na construção social da realidade e sua dinâmica paradoxal, este artigo privilegiará dois autores: Peter Berger e Rubem Alves. Teólogos de formação, ambos enfrentam o enigma da religião sem medo de afirmá-la tensa entre a legitimação e a crítica. Por meio de metodologia bibliográfica e qualitativa, o que será apresentado é fruto de pesquisa exploratória de parte da produção intelectual desses dois autores, principalmente naquilo em que eles se tocam quanto ao tema geral da religião como repressão ou libertação

Amongst sociology's most important contributions to religious studies was the unveiling of its social construction. The sociology of knowledge, here represented by Peter Berger, says that religion is human construction. Every human society is a world's construction project and religion has a special place in this endeavor: it is a privileged legitimation tool, for order maintenance and preservation of the status quo.Yet, paradoxically, Berger says that, in some cases, religion would allow awareness, exercise critical function or appear in history either as supporting force or as force that shakes the world. If, on one hand, religion tends to grant immortality to human constructions, it can also relativize them radically. In order to contribute to the comprehension of religion's role in the social construction of reality and its paradoxical dynamics, this article thereby favours two authors: Peter Berger and Rubem Alves. Theologians and authors of seminal ideas, both faced the "religion enigma", fearless of tense it between legitimation and critic. Through bibliographic and qualitative methodology, this article presents the results of exploratory research of the intellectual production of these two authors, mainly when they complement each other regarding religion (as world constructor) and its general themes such as repression and freedom
