Abstract The present study investigates how the formation of the territory and urban space of Morungaba, São Paulo, were formed, from the first settlement, known as Bairro dos Mansos, to the end of the nineteenth century, when the parish of Our Lady of Conceição of Barra Mansa was created in the city of Itatiba. To this end, rural neighborhoods—based on what was understood as a “neighborhood” in the nineteenth century—are identified as an initial form of territorial occupation, and the process of land donation to the religious patrimony is demonstrated, which determined the choice of the site for the construction of the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Conceição, the place of origin of the urban core. Complementarily, the study seeks to understand the natural site as a basis antecedent to the formation of Morungaba’s urban layout, using the concepts of morphogenesis and Italian territorial theory, as well as to identify the agents that shaped its urban space. This study is necessary due to the scarcity of scientifically grounded production on the history of the city’s formation. In addition, it reinforces the importance of understanding the role of small cities, filling gaps in the understanding of the formation of the microregional urban network. As a methodological approach, the historical method, the game of scales (Lepetit, 2001), and Italian territorial theory (Caniggia; Maffei, 2001) are used in the investigation of the genesis of territorial occupation, aiming to understand its spatial development up to the end of the nineteenth century. For this purpose, the analysis of primary sources is employed, together with nineteenth- and twentieth century cartography. As a result, through the cross-referencing of this documentation, the study seeks to provide a broad understanding of how this territory developed.
